What is the FOIL Method?

FOIL is an acronym that stands for First Outside Inside Last. This is the method that allows you to multiply two binomials. It is equivalent to a process involving the distributive law.

Steps involved in the FOIL Method

Step 1. First: The first term of each binomial are multiplied together.

Step 2. Outside: The first term of the left binomial and the last term of the second binomial.

Step 3. Inside: The last term of the first binomial and the first term of the second.

Step 4. Last: The last term of each binomial.

Step 5. The last step is to simplify and add/subtract like terms.
