Mode Average (Mathematics Lesson)

What Is Mode Average?

The mode (or mode average) is the number that appears most frequently in a set of numbers. It is possible for a set of numbers to have no mode or multiple modes.

How to Find the Mode Average

Question: What is the mode of 4, 12, 8, 3, 8, 4, 2, 8?

Answer: Since 8 appears more times (3 times) than any other number in this set of numbers, then 8 is the mode. Here is the set again with the mode average highlighted:

4, 12, 8, 3, 8, 4, 2, 8

A Set of Numbers with No Mode

Question: What is the mode of 3, 6, 9, 4, 2, 5?

Answer: As all the numbers in this set appear only once, there is no mode for this set.

A Set of Numbers with Multiple Modes

Question: What is the mode of 9, 16, 9, 24, 24, 8, 14?

Answer: As 9 and 24 each appear twice in this set, the modes are 9 and 24. This set has multiple modes.

Top Tip
MODE IS USEFUL FOR NON-NUMERICAL THINGS

Mode is useful when the things being compared do not have numeric values. If we wished to look at the average bank account held by a group, we could use the mode.

MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH AVERAGE IS BEING USED

Look at these test results:

8%, 8%, 9%, 41%, 70%, 71%, 72%, 74%, 78%, 81%, 82%, 87%, 88%, 89%, 90%, 92%

With the 9% score, I could claim that my score was above average. (I would, of course, be using the mode average when making this claim.)
